Description

A professional field controller for GNSS surveying

The Spherefix C500 Data Controller is designed for surveyors, construction teams, engineers and GIS professionals who need a durable handheld device for managing accurate field measurements. It can connect to a compatible RTK GNSS receiver and run supported surveying or mapping software for point collection, stakeout, coding, project management and access to network correction services.

Unlike a standard smartphone, the C500 combines an Android touchscreen with a complete physical English keyboard and dedicated fieldwork controls. This makes it easier to enter descriptions, point numbers, feature codes and measurements while wearing gloves or working in wet, dusty and bright outdoor environments.

Full keyboard and dedicated survey controls

The physical keyboard provides familiar letter, number, navigation and function keys for efficient data entry. Dedicated app and function buttons can provide shortcuts to supported software features, while the survey button can quickly initiate measurement or management functions inside a compatible surveying application.

Long-press functions on the navigation keys can also be used to adjust screen brightness and system volume. These direct controls reduce the need to move through Android menus during repetitive site work, helping users stay focused on the measurement task.

Sunlight-readable Full HD display

The C500 uses a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1080 × 1920 pixels and a brightness of 500 nits. The high-resolution screen provides useful detail when viewing maps, CAD drawings, point lists and background imagery, while the increased brightness improves visibility during outdoor work.

The display is protected by Gorilla Glass and supports five-point capacitive touch input. Users can operate the controller through touch, the physical keyboard or a compatible passive stylus, depending on the application and field conditions.

Android performance for mapping and CAD workflows

Android 12 provides a familiar operating environment for supported surveying, construction and GIS applications. The Qualcomm SM6115 octa-core processor runs at up to 2.0 GHz and is paired with 4 GB of RAM, providing the processing capacity needed for routine field data collection, map display and CAD-file handling.

The controller includes 64 GB of internal storage for applications, project files, coordinate lists, drawings and field photographs. A microSD card of up to 128 GB can be used when additional project storage is required.

Communication with GNSS receivers and correction services

Bluetooth 5.0 BLE allows the C500 to communicate wirelessly with compatible RTK GNSS receivers and other field equipment. The integrated 4G modem supports a broad selection of mobile-network bands, allowing the controller to access network RTK corrections, online project information and cloud-based data services where suitable coverage and subscriptions are available.

Dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi provides another option for connecting to office networks, mobile hotspots and local equipment. NFC is also supported, while the USB-C port uses USB 3.0 with OTG functionality for fast wired data transfer and compatible accessories.

Long operating time for extended fieldwork

The built-in 9,000 mAh battery provides up to 22 hours of stated operating time. This is useful for long survey days, remote projects and construction crews that may not have convenient access to mains power between measurements.

Rapid charging is supported, with a stated charging time of no more than four hours under suitable conditions. Actual endurance will vary with screen brightness, mobile-data use, Wi-Fi, connected equipment and the applications running on the controller.

Designed for demanding outdoor environments

The C500 carries an IP68 protection rating, helping protect it against dust and water during normal outdoor surveying and construction work. It is also specified to withstand a 1.2-metre drop onto concrete, providing additional protection against common field accidents.

The controller has a specified working-temperature range from -20°C to +65°C and can be stored between -30°C and +70°C. These specifications make it suitable for use across a wide variety of climates and project environments, provided that the device is operated and maintained correctly.

Field photography and project documentation

A 13 MP autofocus rear camera with dual LED flash allows users to record survey markers, utility assets, site conditions and completed construction work. Photographs can support measured data by giving office users and clients a clearer visual record of the collected feature or measurement location.

The C500 also includes a gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient-light sensor and electronic compass. A built-in speaker, microphone, vibration motor and LED indicator provide feedback during data collection and communication tasks.

Applications for the Spherefix C500

The C500 is suitable for professional field workflows that require a combination of accurate data entry, reliable connectivity and durable hardware. Surveyors can use it for topographic collection, stakeout and point coding, while construction workers can use it to navigate design points and record completed work. GIS and utility crews can collect asset details, coordinates, notes and photographs directly in the field.

  • RTK GNSS receiver control and network correction access
  • Construction layout, site checks and point stakeout
  • Topographic, cadastral and engineering surveys
  • GIS feature and utility asset collection
  • Road, railway and infrastructure corridor work
  • Viewing CAD drawings, maps and background data

Choosing a data controller from Global GPS Systems

Global GPS Systems supplies professional GNSS equipment for surveyors, engineers, construction crews and GIS users. The Spherefix C500 is well suited to buyers looking for a rugged Android controller with a full physical keyboard, a detailed sunlight-readable display and enough battery capacity for extended fieldwork.

The C500 is a data controller rather than a survey-grade RTK receiver by itself. Centimetre-level positioning requires a connection to a compatible GNSS receiver, suitable field software and an appropriate correction source. Receiver compatibility, software requirements and regional mobile-network support should therefore be considered when configuring a complete surveying system.
