SingularXYZ STS2 Manual Total Station for Professional Surveying
The SingularXYZ STS2 is a professional manual total station developed for land surveying, construction layout, topographic measurements and civil engineering projects. Combining precise optical angle measurement with long-range electronic distance measurement, it provides surveyors with a practical instrument for collecting coordinates, measuring structures and setting out design points in the field.
With 2″ angular accuracy, a reflectorless measurement range of up to 1,000 metres and a single-prism range of up to 5,000 metres, the STS2 is designed for a wide range of everyday surveying tasks. Its dual-sided displays, illuminated keyboards and built-in laser plummet make setup and operation straightforward, while Bluetooth connectivity with SingularPad allows measurements to be managed alongside GNSS survey data.
For surveying companies and construction teams, the STS2 provides a useful alternative when satellite reception is restricted or direct optical measurements are needed for accurate positioning and stakeout.
2 Second Angular Accuracy for Reliable Survey Measurements
The SingularXYZ STS2 provides angular measurement accuracy of 2 arcseconds, with a minimum angular reading of 1 arcsecond. This allows surveyors to measure horizontal and vertical angles with the precision required for many professional surveying and construction applications.
Angle accuracy is important when calculating coordinates, transferring control points and setting out positions over longer distances. Small errors in angle measurement can produce larger position differences as the distance to the target increases.
The STS2 uses an absolute, continuous angle measurement system, allowing operators to perform conventional total station surveys and calculate point positions from measured angles and distances.
Actual survey accuracy also depends on instrument setup, centring, target positioning, atmospheric conditions and the quality of the established survey control.
Reflectorless Distance Measurement up to 1000 Metres
One of the main advantages of the STS2 is its reflectorless electronic distance measurement capability. The instrument can measure distances of up to 1,000 metres without requiring a prism at the target, with specified accuracy of 3 mm + 2 ppm under reference conditions.
Reflectorless measurement is particularly useful when surveying building façades, walls, roofs, road structures and other surfaces that are difficult or inconvenient to access. Surveyors can aim the telescope at a suitable surface and collect a distance measurement without placing a survey prism directly on the object.
For example, a construction surveyor can measure visible building corners or structural surfaces from a safe instrument position rather than physically reaching every location.
The usable reflectorless range depends on surface reflectivity, target angle, lighting and atmospheric conditions. Dark, reflective or irregular surfaces may require shorter measurement distances or an alternative measurement method.
5000 Metre Prism Range for Long Distance Surveying
For longer-distance measurements, the SingularXYZ STS2 supports a single-prism measurement range of up to 5,000 metres. With a prism, the specified distance accuracy improves to 2 mm + 2 ppm under reference conditions.
This makes the STS2 suitable for establishing survey control, measuring topographic points and collecting coordinates across larger construction or infrastructure sites where direct line of sight is available.
Prism-based measurement is useful when the operator needs to identify a specific point rather than measure an arbitrary surface. A survey assistant can position a prism pole over the required location while the total station operator observes the prism through the telescope.
The instrument supports tracking measurements of approximately 0.2 seconds and fine measurements of approximately 1.2 seconds under specified conditions. Tracking mode is useful for quickly updating distance information, while fine mode provides a more deliberate measurement for recording survey points.
Dual Axis Compensator for Stable Measurements
The STS2 includes a dual-axis liquid-electric compensator with a working range of ±6 arcminutes. The compensator detects small instrument tilts and applies suitable corrections to support accurate angle measurements.
During surveying, even a carefully levelled instrument can experience small deviations from its ideal position. The compensator helps reduce the effect of these deviations within its specified operating range.
For construction and land surveying work, this contributes to consistent measurement performance when the instrument is correctly set up on a stable tripod.
The compensator does not replace proper levelling or instrument calibration. Surveyors should still centre and level the total station carefully before beginning measurements.
30x Telescope for Accurate Target Sighting
The SingularXYZ STS2 features a 30× magnification telescope designed for clear observation of survey prisms and other suitable measurement targets.
The telescope provides a 1°30′ field of view and a minimum focusing distance of 1.5 metres. This allows operators to work with both nearby targets and more distant surveying points.
For setting out construction positions, the telescope helps surveyors aim accurately at the prism held by a colleague. During topographic surveying, it provides the optical magnification needed to identify targets across larger sites.
The instrument is manually aimed, giving the operator direct control over target selection and measurement. It does not provide robotic automatic prism tracking.
Bluetooth Connection with SingularPad Surveying Software
The STS2 supports Bluetooth connectivity with SingularPad, SingularXYZ’s field surveying software. This allows operators to manage measurements through a compatible external controller and use the instrument as part of a broader surveying workflow.
SingularPad supports point surveying, stakeout and CAD-related field operations. A particularly useful feature is the ability to work with optical total station measurements and compatible GNSS surveying data within the same project and coordinate system.
For example, a surveyor can establish control points using an RTK GNSS receiver in an open area and then use the STS2 to measure points close to buildings or beneath structures where satellite reception is limited.
Working within a common project helps reduce unnecessary data transfers and coordinate system changes between different surveying methods.
The STS2 itself does not contain an integrated GNSS receiver. Combined GNSS and total station workflows require a compatible external GNSS instrument, controller and the appropriate software configuration.
Dual Sided Displays and Illuminated Keyboards
The STS2 features two 2.7-inch LCD displays, one on each side of the instrument, together with illuminated 29-key alphanumeric keyboards.
This dual-sided design allows operators to access measurement functions from either instrument face. It is particularly useful during face-left and face-right observations, when the telescope is rotated to measure a target from different instrument orientations.
The backlit keyboards support operation in lower-light conditions, such as early morning site work, covered construction areas and indoor environments.
The instrument also includes conventional onboard measurement functions, allowing it to be used for manual surveying tasks without requiring an external controller for every operation.
Built In Laser Plummet for Fast Instrument Setup
Accurate total station surveying begins with positioning the instrument correctly over the survey station. The SingularXYZ STS2 includes a built-in laser plummet that helps operators centre the instrument over a known ground point.
The laser plummet provides specified centring accuracy of ±1.5 mm at a distance of 1.5 metres. It also offers five adjustable brightness levels to accommodate different working environments.
Combined with the instrument’s circular and plate levels, the laser plummet helps surveyors prepare a stable and repeatable setup before collecting measurements.
An optical plummet configuration is also available as an option, allowing users to select the centring method that best matches their working preferences.
Internal Storage and USB Data Transfer
The SingularXYZ STS2 includes internal storage for up to 16,000 survey points, allowing operators to record measurements directly on the instrument.
For conventional fieldwork, this provides space for collecting topographic points, construction measurements and other surveying data before transferring the results to office software.
USB flash disk support provides a straightforward method of transferring stored data, while Bluetooth connectivity with SingularPad enables measurements to be managed through a compatible field controller.
These options give users flexibility when working with either onboard measurements or an external data collection workflow.
Designed for Demanding Construction and Surveying Sites
The STS2 is designed for regular outdoor fieldwork, with an IP54-rated housing that provides protection against dust and splashing water.
Its operating temperature range of -20°C to +50°C supports surveying in a variety of climates and site conditions. The instrument measures 206 × 200 × 353 mm and weighs approximately 6.0 kg.
A rechargeable 7.4 V lithium battery provides up to eight hours of operation under specified conditions. An additional backup battery allows operators to replace the battery during longer surveying days.
Although the STS2 is built for professional use, it should still be protected from heavy rain, strong impacts and unstable tripod setups to maintain reliable measurement performance.
Applications in Land Surveying and Construction
Topographic and Land Surveying
Land surveyors can use the STS2 to collect coordinates and elevation information for terrain mapping, site surveys and land development projects. Prism and reflectorless measurements provide flexibility when working with both accessible and difficult-to-reach points.
Construction Layout and Stakeout
Construction professionals can use the STS2 to transfer design positions from project drawings onto the construction site. Typical applications include setting out building corners, structural grid points, foundations and other construction reference positions.
When connected to SingularPad, compatible stakeout workflows can help operators compare the measured prism position with the required design coordinates.
Building and As Built Surveys
The reflectorless measuring function is useful for documenting visible building surfaces, façades and structural features. Surveyors can collect individual coordinates for preparing existing-condition drawings and checking dimensions.
Road and Infrastructure Projects
Civil engineers and surveyors can use the STS2 to measure points along roads, drainage systems, retaining walls and other infrastructure. The instrument supports control measurements, construction layout and topographic data collection where optical line of sight is available.
Surveying in Areas with Limited GNSS Reception
Total stations are particularly useful close to buildings, under bridges and in other locations where satellite signals may be blocked or reflected. Once suitable survey control has been established, the STS2 can measure points optically without needing GNSS reception at every target.
Engineering and Structural Measurements
Engineers can use the STS2 to measure selected structural points, check positions and document existing geometry. For applications requiring repeated precision measurements, the appropriate survey network, instrument checks and measurement procedures should be used.
