SOUTH SA130 UAV LiDAR Scanner for Professional Aerial Surveying
The SOUTH SA130 is a high-precision airborne LiDAR system designed for land surveying, topographic mapping, forestry and infrastructure inspection. Combining a long-range laser scanner with integrated GNSS/IMU positioning and a 45 MP RGB camera, it allows drone operators to capture detailed 3D point clouds and high-resolution imagery during the same survey flight.
With a maximum laser ranging capability of 1,500 metres, up to 2 million measurements per second and a wide 100° scanning field of view, the SA130 is built for mapping large areas and challenging terrain. Its multi-echo scanning capability also makes it useful for collecting elevation data in wooded and vegetated environments where traditional ground surveying can be difficult or time-consuming.
Designed for integration with compatible professional UAV platforms, the SA130 provides a complete data collection workflow for surveyors, engineers, GIS professionals and drone mapping companies.
Long Range LiDAR Scanning up to 1500 Metres
The SOUTH SA130 uses 1550 nm laser scanning technology with a maximum measurement range of 1,500 metres under specified conditions. This extended ranging capability provides flexibility when surveying areas with large elevation differences, including mountainous terrain, valleys and other difficult-to-access landscapes.
For drone surveyors, long-range measurements make it possible to capture terrain and surface information across changing ground elevations without relying entirely on measurements from ground level. The laser can record points from exposed surfaces such as roads, embankments, buildings, vegetation and natural terrain.
The maximum measuring range should not be confused with the recommended flight altitude. Actual performance depends on target reflectivity, atmospheric conditions, scanning geometry and the required point density. Flight planning should always consider the accuracy and coverage requirements of the project.
Up to 2 Million Measurements per Second
The SA130 collects up to 2 million laser measurements per second, helping operators generate dense 3D point clouds during aerial surveys. A high measurement rate is particularly useful when capturing complex surfaces, irregular terrain and detailed features across larger survey areas.
For land surveyors and civil engineers, these measurements can be processed into terrain models, elevation information and cross-sections. This provides a detailed overview of existing site conditions before construction, infrastructure development or land management work begins.
The system offers a specified horizontal and vertical accuracy of 5 cm at a measurement distance of 300 metres under reference conditions. Actual results depend on flight planning, GNSS positioning, trajectory processing, system calibration and ground control measurements.
Multi-Echo LiDAR for Forestry and Vegetation Mapping
One of the important advantages of the SOUTH SA130 is its multi-echo laser technology. When a laser pulse encounters several surfaces, such as branches, leaves and the ground below, the scanner can record multiple reflections from the same measurement path.
This is particularly useful in forestry surveying, where standard aerial photographs mainly show the upper vegetation canopy. LiDAR measurements can also reach lower vegetation layers and visible ground surfaces through gaps between trees, providing additional information about the terrain beneath.
Forestry professionals can use the resulting data to analyse tree canopy structure, vegetation height and ground elevation. Multi-echo measurements are also valuable for utility corridor mapping, environmental surveys and infrastructure projects where vegetation must be distinguished from the surrounding terrain.
The amount of ground information collected depends on vegetation density, laser incidence angle and flight configuration. Very dense vegetation may still limit the number of laser measurements reaching the ground.
100 Degree Field of View for Wide Survey Coverage
The SOUTH SA130 features a 100° scanning field of view and a scanner supporting 400 scan lines. This allows the LiDAR to collect measurements across a broad strip of terrain as the drone moves along its flight path.
A wider scanning field can help reduce the number of flight lines required to cover larger sites, making it useful for topographic mapping, road corridors, agricultural areas and land development projects. It also provides flexibility when scanning landscapes with changing elevations.
For reliable results, flight line spacing and overlap should be selected according to the required ground point density, terrain conditions and survey accuracy. Areas containing steep slopes, tall structures or dense vegetation may require additional coverage.
Integrated GNSS and IMU Positioning
Accurate aerial LiDAR mapping requires both distance measurements and precise information about the position and orientation of the scanner during flight. The SOUTH SA130 integrates GNSS positioning with an inertial measurement unit to support the generation of georeferenced point clouds.
The positioning system provides a 500 Hz IMU update rate, recording changes in aircraft orientation throughout the survey. Specified positioning accuracy is 1 cm horizontally and 2 cm vertically under reference conditions, with orientation accuracy of 0.006° for roll and pitch and 0.019° for heading.
During post-processing, positioning and orientation information is combined with the laser measurements to calculate the coordinates of individual points. This allows surveyors to work with the resulting point clouds in project coordinate systems and combine them with existing GNSS measurements, GIS data and engineering designs.
Appropriate reference observations, calibration and independent control points remain important when producing accuracy-sensitive surveying deliverables.
45 MP RGB Camera for Colourised Point Clouds
The SOUTH SA130 integrates a 45 MP RGB mapping camera with an 18 mm lens and a full-frame 36 × 24 mm image sensor. This enables operators to capture detailed aerial photographs alongside LiDAR measurements during a survey flight.
During processing, the RGB imagery can be combined with the laser measurements to produce colourised 3D point clouds. Instead of displaying terrain and objects using elevation or intensity colours alone, the resulting model can show the natural appearance of roads, buildings, vegetation and other visible features.
Colourised point clouds are useful when reviewing survey results, identifying objects and presenting site conditions to engineers, planners and project stakeholders. The high-resolution imagery can also support additional photogrammetry workflows when suitable processing software and survey methods are used.
Designed for Professional UAV Platforms
Weighing approximately 2 kg, the SOUTH SA130 is designed for integration with professional aerial surveying platforms. Its compact housing measures 164 × 102 × 138.3 mm, allowing it to be mounted on compatible multirotor and fixed-wing UAV systems.
Supported aircraft configurations include the SOUTH SF1200, SF3300 and SF4200, as well as the DJI Matrice 300 RTK and Matrice 350 RTK with the appropriate integration equipment. These platforms allow operators to select a flight configuration based on the area to be surveyed, terrain conditions and required mission coverage.
The SA130 features an IP64-rated enclosure and operates within a specified temperature range of -20°C to +55°C. This provides protection against dust and splashing water during outdoor surveying operations, although the operating limitations of the aircraft and other equipment must also be respected.
