SOUTH SA130 Pro UAV LiDAR Scanner for Professional Aerial Mapping
The SOUTH SA130 Pro is a lightweight airborne LiDAR system developed for professional drone surveying, topographic mapping, forestry and infrastructure inspection. Combining a long-range laser scanner with integrated GNSS/INS positioning and camera imaging, it allows surveyors and drone operators to collect detailed 3D information across large and difficult-to-access areas.
With a maximum laser ranging capability of 2,150 metres, up to 2 million measurements per second and a wide 100° downward field of view, the SA130 Pro is designed for efficient aerial data collection. Despite its long-range scanning capability, the complete payload weighs approximately 1.3 kg, making it suitable for integration with compatible professional survey drones.
Long Range LiDAR Scanning up to 2150 Metres
One of the main advantages of the SOUTH SA130 Pro is its long-range laser scanning capability. Using 1535 nm laser technology, the scanner can measure distances up to 2,150 metres under specified conditions. This provides additional flexibility when surveying landscapes with significant elevation changes, such as mountains, valleys and large open terrain.
For typical aerial mapping projects, the manufacturer describes an operating distance of approximately 200 to 300 metres. At these distances, operators can collect detailed terrain information while balancing point density, survey coverage and flight efficiency.
The maximum laser range is not the same as a recommended flight altitude. Actual ranging performance depends on surface reflectivity, atmospheric conditions, scanning geometry and the surrounding environment.
Up to 2 Million Measurements per Second
The SA130 Pro collects up to 2 million laser measurements per second, allowing it to create dense 3D point clouds of the surveyed environment. This is useful when mapping terrain, buildings, roads, vegetation and other features that require detailed spatial information.
For land surveyors and engineers, the collected data can be used to generate digital terrain models, surface models, contours and cross-sections. These outputs help document existing conditions and provide valuable information for design, planning and engineering projects.
The system offers specified accuracy of 5 cm at a measurement distance of 300 metres under controlled conditions. Actual mapping accuracy depends on flight planning, GNSS observations, trajectory processing, calibration and ground control.
16 Echo Returns for Vegetation and Forestry Surveys
The SOUTH SA130 Pro supports up to 16 echo returns, making it especially useful for surveying areas covered by trees and vegetation. When laser pulses encounter several surfaces, the scanner can record multiple reflections along the measurement path.
In forestry applications, some measurements may return from the upper canopy, while others can reach branches, lower vegetation or the ground through openings between leaves. This provides useful information for analysing vegetation structure and separating terrain from objects above the ground.
Multiple-return scanning is also valuable for power line corridor mapping, environmental surveys and land development projects involving wooded terrain. The number of usable returns depends on vegetation density, scanning angle and field conditions.
Wide 100 Degree Field of View
The SA130 Pro features a 100° downward scanning field of view, enabling the sensor to capture a broad strip of terrain during each flight line. This can reduce the number of flight paths needed to cover large surveying areas.
A wide field of view is particularly useful when working on open land, construction sites, roads, agricultural areas and landscapes with changing ground elevation. It also helps operators collect data across uneven terrain while maintaining suitable overlap between flight lines.
The required flight spacing and overlap should always be selected according to project accuracy, point density, terrain conditions and the intended mapping output.
Integrated GNSS and Inertial Navigation
Accurate airborne LiDAR mapping requires the position and orientation of the scanner to be determined throughout the flight. The SOUTH SA130 Pro integrates GNSS positioning with an inertial navigation system to record the sensor’s movement and orientation.
The system provides a 500 Hz update rate and specified post-processed positioning accuracy of 1 cm horizontally and 1.5 cm vertically under reference conditions. Post-processed orientation accuracy is specified at 0.006° for roll and pitch and 0.015° for heading.
During processing, this information is combined with laser measurements to create georeferenced 3D point clouds. Surveyors can then work with the data alongside existing control points, GIS information and engineering designs.
Appropriate GNSS reference observations and independent survey control remain important when producing accuracy-sensitive deliverables.
Integrated Camera for Colourised Point Clouds
The SA130 Pro includes an integrated 6 MP imaging camera that collects visual information alongside the laser measurements. This enables the creation of colourised point clouds, making buildings, roads, vegetation and other surveyed objects easier to identify.
Depending on the selected configuration, 26 MP and 45 MP RGB camera options are also available for aerial imaging applications. These configurations can provide additional photographic information alongside LiDAR measurements.
Colourised point clouds help engineers, GIS professionals and project managers interpret scanned environments more easily, particularly when reviewing site conditions or presenting mapping results to clients.
Compact 1.3 kg Design for Professional Drones
Weighing approximately 1.3 kg, the SOUTH SA130 Pro is designed to provide long-range scanning capability without the weight of larger airborne LiDAR payloads. Its compact dimensions of 180 × 116.5 × 87.2 mm, including the quick-release interface, make it suitable for integration with compatible UAV platforms.
The system supports integration with the SOUTH SF1200 and DJI Matrice 400 drone platforms using suitable mounting and control configurations. Manufacturer testing reports up to 70 minutes of level-flight endurance with the SF1200 and approximately 40 minutes with the Matrice 400. Actual operating time depends on the aircraft configuration, battery condition, flight speed, weather and survey requirements.
An IP64-rated enclosure provides protection against dust and splashing water, helping the scanner withstand demanding outdoor surveying environments.
Applications in Surveying, Forestry and Infrastructure
Topographic and Land Surveying
The SA130 Pro can capture detailed terrain information across large land areas, supporting topographic surveys, digital terrain models, contour generation and land development projects. Aerial scanning is particularly valuable where access on foot is difficult or conventional surveying would require substantial field time.
Construction and Civil Engineering
Construction companies can use aerial LiDAR point clouds to document existing site conditions, analyse earthworks and support planning for roads, buildings and infrastructure. Repeated surveys can also help teams compare terrain and construction progress over time.
Forestry and Environmental Mapping
With up to 16 echo returns, the SA130 Pro is suitable for forestry surveys involving canopy structure, vegetation height and ground terrain mapping. Processed point clouds can support forest management, environmental analysis and land monitoring.
Power Line and Utility Corridors
The scanner can collect three-dimensional information along power line routes and utility corridors. This enables engineers to assess the spatial relationships between infrastructure, vegetation and surrounding terrain, supporting corridor mapping and maintenance planning.
Road and Railway Infrastructure
For transport projects, the SA130 Pro can capture detailed information along roads, railways and surrounding landscapes. The processed data can support route planning, infrastructure documentation, cross-section analysis and terrain modelling.
Point Cloud Processing with SOUTH Software
The SOUTH SA130 Pro is supplied with AcuteLas Studio point cloud processing software, supporting the workflow from collected LiDAR measurements to georeferenced point cloud outputs.
Processing functions include point cloud classification, ground point extraction, digital elevation model generation, contour creation and application-specific analysis such as power line surveying.
Advanced echo processing is associated with the SouthLidarPro software environment. Operators should confirm the available software modules and licenses for their selected configuration, especially when planning projects that require the full multiple-return processing capability.
